Presentation Title Study of the Wetting of Coke by Different Pitches

Abstract Scope Prebaked anodes are made of the dry aggregate (coke, recycled butts and green/baked anodes) and the binder pitch. During the mixing process, the wettability of coke by pitch influences the paste behavior. Coke particles (100-125 μm) were prepared using two different procedures and its wettability by five pitches with different properties was studied using a sessile-drop system at 170ºC. The contact angle results show that the wettability of coke by all pitches follows a similar trend for both cases, but the values are different. The cokes and the pitch drop-coke interfaces were also investigated by optical and scanning-electron microscopy techniques. The image analysis results indicate that the coke particle size distributions depend on the coke preparation, which seem to influence the wettability values.
