Abstract Scope AA7050-T7451 are typically used in a built up aerospace structure. Electrolytes trapped in between the aluminum and stainless steel fastener set-up a galvanic couple leading to corrosion of AA7050-T7451. Different corrosion damage morphology can develop along the geometry of the fastener hole depending on the electrochemical conditions and underlying microstructure of AA7050-T7451. This research is focused on the effects of micro-scale (<50 Ám) corrosion morphologies and the underlying microstructure on fatigue initiation and fatigue life of AA7050-T7451. Corroded specimens are cyclically loaded in a controlled environmental chamber with RH >90%, maximum load of 200 MPa and load ratio of R=0.5 at 20 Hz. XCT, EBSD and SEM are used to investigate the effects of corrosion morphology, grain orientation, and secondary phase particles on fatigue initiation. Results of this study will be used to update micromechanical models incorporating the effects of corrosion morphology and underlying microstructure in predicting fatigue indicator parameters.
