| Abstract Scope |
Materials with improved tribological behaviour and wear performance have become the pre-requisite of advanced engineering design. Amongst different available severe plastic deformation processes, friction stir processing (FSP) has emerged as an important tool for refinement of the as cast structure of materials. In the present work, microstructural evolution and wear performance of friction stir processed (FSPed) hydro-turbine steel (HTS) has been studied. FSP of HTS was carried out at constant FSP parameters accompanied by rapid external cooling. Wear studies were conducted using Pin-on-disc wear test on a universal tribometer. Analysis of the evolved microstructure for FSPed HTS as well as worn surfaces was conducted using SEM, EDS, XRD and AFM. The FSPed HTS showed remarkable improvement in the wear performance which may be attributed to the microstructural refinement of HTS. |
