A number of emerging trends are expected to change the ways in which electrical power is generated, transmitted, and distributed requiring a broad range of advances in energy conversion devices and components including power electronics, transformers, inductors, and sensors to name just a few. Examples of such trends include: (1) a shift from large-scale centralized power generation of electricity to increased penetration of renewable and fossil based distributed generation, (2) increased deployment of electric vehicles, and (3) an aging electricity transmission and distribution network. This presentation will highlight ways in which advanced soft magnetic material research and development can be coupled with device and systems-level research as an enabler for new technological solutions including high frequency transformers and inductors, power electronics interfaces for grid integration of distributed generation sources, and sensors for power flow monitoring.
