||A Total Scattering Study of Thermal Expansion of Bulk Metallic Glasses

We used in situ neutron total scattering technique to investigate thermal expansion behavior of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) upon heating below the glass transition temperature. Reciprocal-space and real-space analyses of the total scattering data with the pair distribution function method reveal variations of short range order (SRO) and medium range order (MRO) in response to thermal expansion. The similarity between these results and those obtained by mechanical loading of BMGs will be discussed. Our results have implications for understanding the glass structure at multiple length scales.
