||B19’ Strain Glass Transition and Associated Phase Diagram in Deformed TiNi SMA with Unique Properties

A new B19′ strain glass state was discovered in TiNi SMA produced by cold-rolling deformation. As compared to previously reported strain glasses, B19’ strain glass performs unique properties including quasi-linear superelasticity with 4% recoverable strain, slim hysteresis and high strength (>1.0GPa) over 200K temperature range. A quantitative phase diagram is established to describe all the strain states of deformed SMAs. This phase diagram not only shows the well-known austenite and martensite under low deformation, but also show a coexisting R and B19’ nanodomains state and a B19’ strain glass state under high deformation. This work provides possible explanation for the long standing puzzle of the quasi-linear elasticity in deformed TiNi SMAs, expands the shape memory alloys field and strain glass field, and may shed light on the design of new functional materials with novel mechanical properties through altering the structural phase transition characteristic and defect engineering.
