Magnesium alloys are primarily strengthened by grain refinement. Production of ultra-fine grained alloys have been pursued by powder metallurgy, as well as thermomechanical processing techniques. Terves has been developing high strength, high ductility, and high temperature alloys used in self-removing completion tools. Different approaches to the production of nano-magnesium, including PM, nanoparticle additions, and new alloy chemistries and resultant materials properties will be discussed.
