Presentation Title Utilization of Copper Smelter Slags by Direct Reduction

Abstract Scope Copper smelter slags are generally treated as waste materials eligible for only limited low-end applications such as road construction and abrasive materials. In this talk, we will demonstrate a close-loop route for comprehensively utilizing copper smelter slags through high temperature metallurgical reduction by natural gas, leading to the formation of copper-containing pig iron. By examining the selection of accompanying melting slags comprising CaO and CaF2, it is believed that a reliable CaO/CaF2 is to be fixed at 10% at the temperature of 1598 K to achieve low viscosity. Additionally, we will illustrate an efficient yet cost-saving technique to reduce the excessive sulfur content to render the copper-containing pig iron suitable for anti-bacterial stainless steel production. It is thus estimated that such a versatile technology could be applicable for the treatment of up to ~30 million tons of worldwide annual smelter slag generation.
