Abstract Scope |
Maaden aluminum smelter in Saudi Arabia commenced operation in 12-12-12. The reduction consists of 2 potlines with 360 cell per line (720 cells) at operating amperage of 376 kA.
On April 30, power lost standby rectifier while preventive maintenance, this incident lead to operate Potline 2 at low load (fluctuated from 290 vs 376 kA) for frequent periods (15 time, 4 - 8 hours each) in order to carry out maintenance in substation without scarifying Potline control.
Ma’aden Rectifiers were assembled including diodes fabricated with a different process (recrystallize structure) that were limiting the rectifiers to operate at the nominal capacity of 105 kA per unit if standby rectifier lost. That make the cell heat balance control major challenge for Potroom control operating at 85 kA lower than design.
This paper covers the successful controlling of the process during the power limitation. |
