Presentation Title Biomimetic Hard-to-Soft Interfaces: Guiding Osteogenesis to Infection Free Implants

Abstract Scope Realizing controllable interactions at the bio-nano material interfaces are vital in developing next generation engineered implants. Interfacial integrity for the host to implant interface remains a challenge despite significant efforts made to improve the currently employed interface fixation approaches. Host-bone integration is rather dependent on the bioactivity of the implant to promote osteointegration. While improving bioactivity, controlling the growth of common pathogens becomes also critical. Failure to adequately combat these bacterial infections at implant-tissue interface often results in complex revision procedures where the removal of the implant may be the only remedy. Here we will summarize our novel approach to control bio-nano interfaces to modify the biological response at the implant surface building upon engineered peptides. While harvesting the therapeutic value of the Wnt signaling pathway to induce bone growth, our peptide based approach also provide molecular design to create infection free surfaces.
