Keeping charge materials dry prior to adding into molten aluminum has been a challenge historically. The Aluminum Association explosion data shows that wet charging material is a major cause for molten aluminum explosions. Materials such as primary aluminum sows, T-bar, and magnesium are oven dried and stored prior to charging into molten aluminum. It is critical that the dry material is not contaminated during storage. To minimize cost and provide the plants with flexibility in choosing their storage locations, Arconic has develop a tool which will monitor for the formation of condensation. The tool is positioned at the material storage location and will alarm when condensation formation is likely. The unit is called a Condensation Warning System (CWS) and has been under testing at our Texarkana, TX plant since July, 2017. This paper will discuss the design of the system and present the results of the data collected.
