Use of a high-power diode laser has been proposed for use in conjunction with friction stir welding to soften the weld zone prior to the welding pass in a process called diode laser assisted friction stir welding. To understand the effects of the laser heating process alone, plates of HY80 steel were subjected to laser heating using varying laser parameters. Effects of the laser heating on workpiece microstructure are presented and final laser parameters are proposed for a planned diode laser assisted friction stir welding system.
