Abstract Scope |
Additive manufacturing is known to generate unique and distinguished microstructure. It is imperative to be able to control the microstructure and defects when materials are used in critical applications. Ti6Al4V is popular material used extensively in aerospace and biomedical applications and one of the pioneers in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. This talk summarizes over a decade of research on fabrication of this material using powder bed processes. The focus of the studies has been process-microstructure-performance. We discuss multiple discoveries on fabricating Ti6Al4V using these processes. These discoveries include impact of process parameters on defect density and microstructure, how the microstructure and defect density impact the RT and high temperature elastic and plastic behavior, and the impact of microstructure and defects on long terms performance and fatigue. The discussion will cover modeling and simulation of the process, microstructural evaluation and mechanical testing results, and fatigue model development. |
