Abstract Scope Next-generation power cycles using supercritical CO2 (sCO2) as the working fluid have gained significant interest due to the potential for improved conversion efficiency and reduced cost. These cycles utilize compact heat exchanges which may fabricated by various joining processes, such as transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding. Determining the compatibility of these bonded materials in high-temperature CO2 is an important step in designing an sCO2 power cycle. Here we present results on the oxidation behavior of joined structures for two Ni alloys, Haynes 230 and 282, formed by transient liquid phase bonding. The stacks were exposed to high purity CO2 at 0.1 MPa and 700 °C for up to 4000 h and at 25 MPa and 720 °C for up to 1500 h. The oxidized stacks were characterized using several techniques to assess the suitability of TLP bonded Ni alloys as heat exchanger materials for sCO2 power cycles.
