Recently, much attention has been paid to nanoporous Pd(Ni) and Au structure products produced by dealloying of Pd-Ni-P and Au-Pd-Si bulk glassy alloys because the nanoporous products exhibit useful electrochemical properties such as high performance catalytic and cell electrode characteristics. It is important to develop Zr-based bulk glassy alloys containing a small amount of Au and to examine the possibility of synthesizing nanoporous Au structure because of the great advantage of much inexpensiveness for base Zr-Al-Ni-Cu bulk glassy alloys as compared with their noble metal base Pd-Ni-P and Au-Pd-Si bulk glassy alloys. This paper aims to examine the glass forming ability and fundamental properties of Zr-Al-Cu-Au and Zr-Cu-Al-Ag-Au bulk glassy alloys as well as the formation of nanoporous Au structure by dealloying their bulk glassy alloys. In addition, we investigate the possibility of developing the nanoporous Au products as cell electrode materials through the evaluation of electrochemical properties.
