Presentation Title YP-10: Understanding of Deformation Twinning Characteristics in HCP Materials

Abstract Scope Deformation twinning is an important mode of plastic deformation in Hexagonal Close Packed (HCP) materials. Twinning is a sequential process of nucleation, propagation, growth and sometimes detwinning. Twinning is governed by both microstructural and mechanical responses. In this work, we applied a recently developed full-field Fast-Fourier-Transform (FFT) model, which accounts for twinning shear transformation to understand the role of local mechanical responses on twinning. FFT model successfully predicts the local stresses associated with twinning in HCP materials. Using the predicted local mechanical responses, we developed an understanding towards the following characteristics of {10-12} tensile twins: i) the effect of grain size on twin growth process; ii) the role of local stress state on twin-twin junction formation; iii) the influence of twin-twin junctions on de-twinning process; and iv) the twin thickness at grain boundary is larger for crossing twins. The developed understanding towards deformation twinning characteristics will be linked with predictive models.
