Phase-field simulations of nucleation and equiaxed dendritic growth of the primary hexagonal close-packed Mg phase followed by the nucleation and growth of an intermetallic phase in the interdendritic regions are presented. A zoomed-in region of a melt channel under eutectic conditions is investigated with high resolution. Particular emphasis is laid on the question of divorced versus cooperative growth of the eutectic microstructure. The simulations are validated by experimental observations.
