Design and fabrication of band gap material systems is often done in an ad-hoc manner, based on repetitive trial-and-error attempts to achieve desired properties. This slows the pace of development, and more than likely means the full potential of performance is left unrealized. This talk will discuss the application of topology optimization to systematically design cellular materials with tailored band gaps for elastic (and phononic) waves. Constraints associated with additive manufacturing are incorporated into the methodology in order to guarantee manufacturability of the calculated designs.
