||Microstructure and Hardness Properties of Tool Steel Friction Cladding on Mild Steel Substrate

The present investigation deals with solid state friction surface cladding using consumable tool steel on the mild steel substrate in atmosphere. The main objective of this work is to develop hard surface coatings on mild steel for better wear properties. A detailed microstructural investigation has been performed across the clad cross section by employing optical microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction technique. Mechanical properties were investigated by measuring the hardness across the clad cross section by using micro hardness tester. This study reveals out the gradient microstructure across the clad and surface by moving from the interface. A significant grain refinement was observed in the heat affected zone of the substrate. Microstructural analysis also revealed a sound and uniform bonding between a clad layer and the substrate.
