||Aluminium and Magnesium Based Metal Matrix Composites: Micro and Nano

Aluminum and Magnesium based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) reinforced with micron size ceramic particles have been on horizon for some time. More than two decades of research in understanding the science of MMCs has provided deeper insights on certain limitations of conventional MMCs, especially barriers in pushing the limits of properties close to higher fraction of theoretical limits. One of the key requirements for achieving quantum jump in the strength and ductility of MMCs is through reduction in the size of reinforcement particles from micron to nano. In the last few years there have been few successful attempts to process nano-size particle reinforced aluminum and magnesium based MMCs using different routes. Amongst various routes, processing of Polymer derived Nano- Metal Matrix Composites by injecting polymer-precursors either in liquid or in solid form into liquid metal/alloy melt has shown great promise. Nano- MMCs processed by these processes are found to possess properties having orders of magnitude higher than conventional MMCs(Micro-MMCs). In this presentation, in-situ processing of Nano Metal Matrix composites by in-situ pyrolysis and their superior properties are discussed.
