||Tailoring the Magnetic Properties and Mechanical Behavior of Cobalt-Iron Metallic Glasses

Cobalt-iron based metallic glasses have attracted lot of interest due to their remarkable soft magnetic properties, ultra-low coercivity, low remnant magnetization, and very low saturation magnetostriction. Here, we report on tailoring the magnetic properties and mechanical behavior of soft-magnetic Co-Fe metallic glasses. The trend in magnetic properties, mechanical behavior, and glass forming ability is explained from the atomic arrangement (simulation) and valence band (experiment) studies. Saturation magnetization, coercivity, and Curie temperature of these alloys were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The saturation magnetization was found to increase and the coercivity was found to decrease with the increase in iron content. Mechanical behavior including modulus and hardness maps were measured by nano-indentation. A drastic change in magnetic properties was found in going from fully amorphous state to a mixture of nano-crystalline and amorphous to fully devitrified form.
