||Weibull Analysis for the Repeatability of Die-castings Made by an Al-Mg-Si-Mn Alloy

The tensile properties of high pressure die-castings made by a Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloy have been assessed by Weibull analysis for the repeatability of mechanical properties. Samples were obtained by direct casting tensile samples and by machining castings at specified positions. The distributions of yield strength, UTS and elongation of the samples were analysed by the normal standard deviations method and by the Weibull statistical model with three parameters. It was found that the variations in the Weibull characteristic parameters could be used to evaluate the repeatability of the samples made by direct casting and machining castings at different locations. The results also showed that the scattering of tensile properties was mainly due to the presence of porosity and non-uniform microstructure in the die-castings. The casting samples with a reduced porosity level and an improved microstructural uniformity demonstrate improved tensile properties and increased characteristic parameters in Weibull statistical distribution.
