||W-17: Purification of Titanium Based Cement from Reduced Ilmenite

Titanium based cermets, in particular titanium carbide-based cermets (TiC-based cermets), are among the most important hard materials. In this study, an attempt will be made to purify TiC from the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite concentrates (FeTiO3) from KwaZulu-Natal. The use of ilmenite concentrates eliminates the necessity for purification into TiO2 and reduction to metallic titanium. The aim of the project is to purify the Fe-TiC product from the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite into high grade TiC. Material characterisation will be conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is expected that this work will serve as a guideline for subsequent work on production of high purity titanium based cermets using ilmenite.
