||C-68: Effects of Ageing Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Mg-Li Based Alloys

Room-temperature ageing responses of duplex structured Mg-8%Li and Mg-8%Li-3%Al alloys have been investigated. Microstructural analysis revealed that the precipitation and coarsening process of α particles occurred in β phases of both alloys during ageing process. With the increase of ageing time, the hardness value of α phases in Mg-8%Li alloy kept almost unchanged , but the contained β phases exhibited a slight age-softening. Compared with the Mg-8%Li alloy, the age-softening of β phases in Mg-8%Li-3%Al alloy was much more profound. Meanwhile, a normal age-hardening of α phases was maintained. Tensile results indicated that obvious ageing softening phenomenon in terms of macro tensile strength occurred in both alloys. For Mg-8%Li alloy, cracks preferentially initiated at α/β interfaces. However ，cracks occurred at both α/β interfaces and slip bands in α and β phases for the Mg-8%Li-3%Al alloy .
