Abstract Scope This paper presents a model for the simulation of creep-fatigue crack growth in steel specimens at elevated temperatures. Finite element analyses of 2D and 3D through-thickness sharp cracks in compact tension (CT) specimens are performed to simulate the crack growth under cyclic and time dependent loading conditions. Plasticity induced crack closure is affected under creep loading and the influence of the creep loading on the crack growth rate during the fatigue portion is thus characterized. Extensive experimental work is conducted in the temperature range of 600-700C to characterize the fatigue and creep- fatigue crack growth in an improved austenitic steel (NF 709) alloy. Comparisons with experimental crack growth rate and crack closure are performed to validate the numerical results. Furthermore, several materials employed in power generation plant components are analyzed such as modified 9Cr-1Mo steel and 316L. This study furthers the understanding of creep fatigue interactions during crack growth.
