||Molten Salt Assisted Incorporation of High Volume Fraction Nanoparticles during Solidification Nanoprocessing of Light Metal Matrix Nanocomposites

Al matrix nanocomposites have tremendous potentials for automotive, aerospace, and military applications as they could offer low density, high specific strength, good stiffness and excellent thermal stability. Solidification nanoprocessing is promising for scalable manufacturing of these high performance nanocomposites. However, large scale incorporation and uniform dispersion of high loading of nanoparticles into molten metals at high temperatures is still a serious challenge for industrial nanoproduction. Here we report a novel method by integrating molten salt-assisted nanoparticle incorporation and ultrasonic dispersion to effectively feed and uniformly disperse high volume fraction nanoparticles in molten Al alloy. The mechanical properties of Al nanocomposites are dramatically enhanced with the high loading of nanoparticles. This work paves a scalable and effective way to manufacture high performance Al matrix nanocomposites for industrial applications.
