Eutectic, dendritic and cellular solidification represent prototypical examples of spontaneous pattern formation in non-equilibrium systems. An unsolved problem in the study of pattern formation is the characteristic periodicity chosen by the system and several criteria have been proposed, such as marginal stability, maximum velocity and solvability. Here we propose a new, general criterion for state selection, which is based on the minimization of the Freidlin- Wentzell action. The criterion is tested on a model of cellular solidification known as the damped Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (DKS) equation and the results are in excellent agreement with simulations.
