||Simultaneous Efficient Atomic Packing in Metallic Glass Structures

Great progress has been made in understanding the atomic structure of metallic glasses. A recent paper describes a connection between efficient atomic packing around all atoms simultaneously in metallic glass structures and the ability to form bulk metallic glasses. This is a challenging concept, and in this talk we illustrate this feature with selected examples of well-known bulk metallic glasses. These examples highlight the principles needed to achieve simultaneous efficient packing and give insights into metallic glass structures and compositions that are most likely to produce bulk metallic glasses.
