Abstract Scope |
Owing to its unique capability of forming materials point by point, additive manufacturing enables the production of metal parts with spatially-varying microstructures. By controlling the distribution of different microstructures in the build, it is possible to produce materials with enhanced mechanical properties. Here, we manipulate the local solidification conditions during selective laser melting (SLM) to print near-single crystal “blocks” with distinct textures. We arrange these blocks to take advantage of their anisotropic mechanical properties and produce functionally graded structures with deliberate plastic behavior. We characterize the development of plastic strain both within the blocks and at the block interfaces using in situ digital image correlation and directional reflectance microscopy. The results demonstrate a new opportunity to design damage tolerant materials. |
