Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of graphene on non-metal substrates has gained increasing attention in recent years because it allows the graphene to be grown on technologically important dielectric substrates for direct device fabrication. In this talk, we present CVD growth of quality graphene on carbon and silica surfaces without the presence of metal catalysts. The growth of graphene on carbon surface enables us to understand how carbon nanotubes are formed, and the growth of graphene on silica surfaces, such as diatom frustules and silica beads, allows us to fabricate complex 3-D graphene structures.
