Presentation Title Environmental Impacts of Aluminum Dross after Metal Extraction

Abstract Scope Aluminum metal is highly demanded industrial and commercial use. It is met by the ever growing aluminum industry. This study explores the different environmental impacts of salt-cake resulting from aluminum dross on ground-water and soil. Previous studies have uncovered toxic and hazardous compounds were released, such as hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulfide and phosphine. The purpose of this research is to quantify the concentrations of those byproducts and their sources. Experiments were completed using XRF, TOC, and ICP to find elemental composition before and after dissolving salt cakes in distilled-water. The results indicated a significant interaction of the salt-cake components with water. Most of the elements except phosphorus were present in the sample taken from an aluminum industry. Other harmful heavy-metals and excessive salt concentrations were also found. The results depict that the effects of salt-cake are detrimental to the environment sustainability, posing a threat to human health.
