||PP-8: Copper Extraction from Sulfate-chloride Media using Ketoxime and Salicylaldoxime Extractants

Due to the increasing industrial practice of adding chloride salts and/or using sea water in the sulfuric acid leaching of copper minerals, the solvent extraction process is being applied to leaching solutions that contain large amounts chloride ions. The formation of copper and iron chloro-complexes in the leaching solution should affect the copper extraction equilibria in SX. In this work, to obtain basic knowledge on how the chloride ions affect the SX extraction equilibria, the copper extraction isotherms were determined for solutions containing 0, 60 and 110 gpl of chloride ions using LIX 84 and LIX 860N extractants. These hydroyoxime extractants, alone or mixed are nowadays used in many industrial solvent extraction plants. It was determined that the presence of chloride in the solution produced a significant shift of the extraction equilibrium, particularly for the ketoxime LIX-84. The chemical entrainment of chloride ions by both extractants was also determined.
