Anode bottom of the aluminium cell is not equipotential. The difference in the rate of carbon consumption leads to the emergence of irregularities of several types (spikes, lags, overrunnings etc.).
Solution of the conservation equations (energy and charge) with the Peltier heat and electrochemical dissipation overvoltage taken into account is made to estimate potential, current and temperature distribution for the spikes of different height and to identify the conditions of anode passivation.
Mass transfer is complicated by the presence of carbon dust. An attempt of artificial spikes manufacturing by means of mass transfer conditions by carbon dust worsening is described.
Overvoltages and exchange current densities for anode heterogeneous chemical reaction in the cryolite-alumina melts are determined.
