The phase field crystal (PFC) approach has emerged as a promising computational approach to simulate microstructural evolution on diffusive time scales not accessible by standard atomistic simulations. This talk will illustrate with several examples how PFC models, and long-wavelength amplitude equations derived from those models, have yielded novel insights into complex mesoscale phenomena strongly influenced by crystal defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries and elastic interactions. The talk will also discuss challenges in relating PFC simulations to experimental systems, which stem from the approximate nature of the representation of the crystal density field and the formulation of the dynamics.
