||A Unified Dictionary Approach for the Indexing of Electron Diffraction Modalities

Reliable indexing of experimental electron diffraction modalities such as Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), Precession Electron Diffraction (PED), and Electron Channeling Patterns (ECP) for material systems of arbitrary crystallographic symmetry represents an important problem in materials characterization. While there are commercial packages for EBSD and PED indexing, no such package exists for the automated indexing of ECPs. EBSD and PED indexing rely on different algorithms, Hough transforms and cross correlations, respectively. In this contribution, we describe a unified method to index diffraction patterns using a dictionary approach. This method is based on forward modeling of the experimental modality to generate a pattern dictionary and matching of experimental and simulated patterns using a normalized dot product method. We will present results on a number of different datasets and compare them to the results from commercial packages.
