| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium alloys have distinct advantages such as low density and high specific strength, but limited corrosion resistance restricts their widespread use in industrial applications. Therefore, it is important to examine the critical factors that could affect the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys in order to develop new corrosion resistant alloys. It has been reported that the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys could be influenced by texture. However, there has been little study on the effects of the surface orientation on the corrosion behavior of magnesium single crystals. In this study, magnesium single crystals with various crystallographic orientations were prepared for corrosion tests in order to identify the effects of surface orientation on the corrosion behavior in a systematic manner. Corrosion tests were carried out using electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The specimen surfaces were analyzed using SEM and XRD. |
