In the present research work, the relation between the phase transformation behavior and the heat treatment temperature in the Ni rich NiTi SMA was experimentally investigated. In view of the high sensibility of this alloy to the chemical composition, heat treatment conditions as well as to the imposed cooling/heating rate, a new combination of these parameters was proposed in order to identify optimal thermal conditions that produce later the shape memory and the superelastic effect of this material.
The thermal analysis at zero stress was performed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry experiments. The calorimetric results showed that the thermal properties such as the transformation temperatures and thermal hysteresis are strongly influenced by the increase of the heat treatment temperature. Both the R phase thermal behavior and the hardness evolution were also discussed. The obtained findings are argued and supported by microstructural observations as well as by X-Ray diffraction analysis.
