| Abstract Scope |
Cylinder head is one of the main component for the medium size marine diesel engine. Due to its complicated cooling path combined with requirement of high mechanical properties, cylinder head is manufactured by ductile cast iron. Owing to higher volume shrinkage tendency during the solidification of ductile cast iron, it is important to establish a proper casting procedure. In this study, numerical analysis of the casting process for the assessment of casting defect distribution and verification of the analysis through destructive inspection of actual casting were carried out. In order to obtain higher prediction accuracy for the shrinkage cavity of ductile cast iron, fading coefficient related to graphite morphology as a function of elapsing time after inoculation was introduced to the numerical analysis for the shrinkage cavity distribution. Based on this study, a proper casting procedure such as chill arrangement and shape of core was established to minimize shrinkage defects. |
