Presentation Title Liquid Metal Feeding Technology for Twin-roll Casting of Magnesium and Aluminium

Abstract Scope The main purpose of liquid metal feeding in the twin-roll casting process is to distribute molten metal from a relatively narrow launder or transfer tube across the comparatively large width of a tip or nozzle located in the confined space of the caster roll gap. Moreover, this challenge has to be achieved with homogeneous temperature and velocity fields across the cast width. Thus, liquid metal feeding technology participates to the heart of the twin-roll casting process, both for Magnesium and Aluminium. It includes : tip/nozzle configuration, tip preheating, tip positioning, headbox or tundish configuration, metal level control and regulation, start-up procedure. From Pechiney to Novelis in the Aditya Birla Group, Novelis PAE has been a major actor in developing twin-roll continuous strip-casting technology for more than five decades, for Aluminium (more than 110 casters installed), and also for Magnesium (3 casters installed).
