| Abstract Scope |
The oxidation resistance in Nb alloys for high temperature applications is being investigated. The effect of Al on the oxidation resistance has been determined under isothermal conditions for Nb-30Cr-10Si and Nb-30Cr-10Si-5Al (at%) alloys. The samples were heated in air for 24 hours in a range of temperature from 700 to 1400oC and furnace cooled to room temperature. Oxidation resistance was evaluated by plotting weight gain per unit area as a function of oxidation temperature. Internal oxidation at the solid solution phase was the main feature after oxidation at temperatures above 1000oC. Although Al was effective in enhancing the oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures the low temperature oxidation, however, was not affected. Samples were analyzed by SEM, EDS , x-ray mapping, and XRD. |
