||Exploring Calcium for Improving Properties of Magnesium Alloys with a Destination for Rolled Sheet

Mg sheet alloys have promising applications in automotive, aerospace and electronics industries. However, the further development is restricted, because of the poor formability at room temperature. The presence of about 0.17wt% neodymium in ZEK100 alloy reduces intensity of the basal texture thus improving the room temperature formability. Ca is also capable of modifying basal texture and is known to decrease the Mg ignition and flammability. The effect of micro-alloying with calcium 0.25 and 0.50wt% on the solidification microstructure of ZEK100 alloy was evaluated. The tensile, yield and compressive strengths decreased and elongation increased with an increase in the rolling temperature. The rolling of calcium containing ZEK100 alloys were not successful and resulted in inter-granular fracture arising from brittle Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase formed along the grain boundaries which was difficult to completely eliminate despite lengthy solutionizing heat treatment.
