Due to its renewed importance in modern steels, numerous works have been carried out for years to explain the tempering of freshly formed martensites. The relation between microstructure and mechanical properties is still a matter of debate, mostly because fine scale microstructural heterogeneities responsible for the mechanical properties evolution, including transition carbides, are not known in details. One of the difficulties lies in the autotempering process, which is strongly dependent on processing conditions. In order to avoid it, we characterize some intermediate carbides obtained during tempering of ‘virgin martensites’. C precipitation is investigated mostly by atom probe tomography and electron microscopy, and the observed carbides compared with the one commonly reported in more conventional steels.
