Abstract Scope 316L SS sheets often undergo multiaxial strain path changes during their forming. The nature of strain path change could trigger different deformation mechanisms modifying its hardening behavior. In situ neutron diffraction during biaxial loading of cruciform shaped 316L SS samples indicates that following a strain path change, recovery of internal stresses could play a crucial role on hardening, which is not accounted for in existing plasticity models. We propose to use multiscale modeling to gain deeper insights on mechanical response of 316L SS during different strain path changes. Macroscale FE simulations are performed to test multiaxial hardening models and role of cruciform geometry on stresses during strain path changes. The FE simulation results help drive a mesoscale elastoviscoplastic FFT model to test dislocation based hardening models. Role of type II and III stresses on lattice strain and peak width evolution will be highlighted by comparing experimental and virtual diffraction peaks.
