Abstract Scope AlMgSc sheets are fabricated via two widely different casting routes, i.e. book mold and strip casting, followed by a cold rolling procedure that also includes an intermediate annealing treatment. The effect of solidification cooling rate and the supersaturation level in the as-cast sate is linked to the difference in the strengthening behaviour through correlating the development of micro/nano-structure and the evolution of mechanical properties. The understanding of such microstructure-properties relationship is particularly crucial when designing the processing route for optimized mechanical properties in scandium containing alloys.
