Abstract Scope Printed and sintered nanoparticle films offer unique advantages such as high surface area, low strain, and highly controlled microstructure. Further, printing allows the fabrication of microscale electronic features that are not possible to make via conventional lithography techniques. In this talk, we present the design, manufacture, and performance of printed touch sensors, biosensors, and high temperature strain sensors. We demonstrate that the printing provides a very high sensitivity for detection due to the high surface area of the films. Further, for resistance based sensors such as strain sensors, we observe that the 3D printed films behave like metamaterials, leading to a high gauge factor, an ultra-low thermal strain, and an enhanced thermal stability at temperatures up to 500 C. Analytical models and simulation tools are developed to capture the behavior of these sensors. We also demonstrate a method to print the electronics on vertical walls for antenna applications.
