Abstract Scope Research into 3-dimensional materials science tools began in earnest about 15 years ago with the introductions of robotic serial sectioning, and focused ion beam serial-sectioning methods. Such automated data collection methods, together with emerging software tools, are enabling simulations that emulate various microstructure-property relationships for predicting engineering behavior of materials and structures. However, industrial design, manufacturing and materials engineering are slow to develop and adopt the tools. Several reasons for this are explored in this presentation by looking at results from employing the tools for analysis of selected aerospace alloys. Examining the workflows necessary to produce 3D data sets, and to process them into materials models, reveals both important progress over the last decade, as well as areas needing further development to fully incorporate the methods into broader engineering workflows.
