Abstract Scope |
The threat of firearms is a matter of personal concern, especially to soldiers in armed conflicts, as well as police officers and civilians involved with public security. The protection against this kind of assault requires appropriate protection, which can be obtained only with ballistic armor. This work evaluated from ballistic tests different compositions of composites reinforced with either fique fiber or fique fabric. The tests evaluated the projectile's energy loss in impact with the composites. Fique fibers or fabrics incorporated in polyester resin plates with volume fraction of 30% were ballistic tested using the 7.62 caliber ammunition. The fibers were embedded under pressure in the polyester resin matrix and cured at room temperature for 24 hours. The tested specimens were examined by scanning electron microscopy. |
