Abstract Scope |
Calcium oxalate cluster crystal (COCC) is an important characteristic of ginseng. By measuring the shape, size, content and distribution of COCCs, the authenticity and quality identification can be realized. Conventional methods for determination of calcium oxalate are destructive and only two-dimensional.
In this presentation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography method was used to investigate the microstructures of ginsengs. Four different ginseng samples were collected and investigated. The size and position distribution, the volume and amount of the COCCs are obtained accordingly. This study is the first to provide evidence of the distribution characteristics of COCCs to identify different ginsengs, concerning the species authentication and age identification. The results showed that this method provides a feasible comprehensive evaluation of the distribution of COCCs accumulation in ginseng in situ. This method is also expected to reveal important relationships between COCCs and the occurrence of the effective medicinal components of ginseng. |
