Abstract Scope Transparent Er3+-doped ytterbium-aluminum garnet (YbAG:Er3+) ceramics were fabricated by a solid-state reactive and vacuum sintering. Power dependent luminescence properties in the range from cryogenic to room temperature were analyzed, especially the up-conversion. The order parameter of up-conversion processes of YbAG:Er3+ (1 at%) ceramics was determined to investigate the efficiency of different channels of the energy transfers. Obtained spectroscopic properties were related to the microstructural and thermal properties of the studied samples.
