The electron beam-directed vapor deposition (EB-DVD) method incorporates an inert carrier gas and moderately high deposition chamber pressure (1-100 Pa) to enable non-line-of-sigh deposition, good deposition efficiency, and high deposition rates. Here, the EB-DVD process has been simulated by combing the gas-phase direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and surface deposition kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) techniques. The simulation scheme allows for the prediction of coating microstructure and thickness uniformity directly from deposition parameters. These techniques have been combined to simulate and optimize the deposition of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) on model single and doublet guide vanes for gas turbines.
